[In April of 2008 two armed men broke in to nine-year-old Josef Emanuel’s bedroom. They cut off his younger sister’s legs and left her to bleed to death. She became one of nearly 30 albinos in Tanzania who’ve been killed since January 2008 in a spate of targeted killings.

Already, before the recent wave of murders, they were an exposed and vulnerable group in one of the world’s poorest countries. In addition to discrimination, and now murder, the albino population face unique medical issues. Serious eye problems often lead to a lack of education among albino people.

They then are frequently forced to take low-wage jobs under the equatorial sun and a lack of knowledge about skin cancer kills many of them.

In the midst of tragedy there are also found laughter and a spirit of hope.
The albino people in Tanzania are organizing and refusing to let the murderers continue unnoticed. They are demanding action from the government and the government has begun to take notice.]

Omayra Sánchez was one of the 25,000 victims of the Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia) volcano which erupted on November 14, 1985. The 13-year old had been trapped in water and concrete for 3 days. The picture was taken shortly before she died and it caused controversy due to the photographer’s work and the Colombian government’s inaction in the midst of the tragedy, when it was published worldwide after the young girl’s death.

An indigenous woman holds her child while trying to resist the advance of Amazonas state policemen who were expelling the woman and some 200 other members of the Landless Movement from a privately-owned tract of land on the outskirts of Manaus, in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon.

This picture makes me so fucking mad. I don’t even want to talk about it. Had one too many discussions about indigenous people’s rights.

After seeing this, and then reading this that has to do with the “rights” of indigenous people… you don’t need much more proof of just how big of a joke the United Nations is.

So yesterday I took Amir to Cici’s pizza. He eats like 3 slices of pizza whenever we go there and he loves the Arcade in the back of the place.

On the way back home, he kept pointing out the window and saying, “LOOK A MOUNTAIN!” And I’d reply with, “WOW! A MOUNTAIN!?!” And he’d say, “YES. A MOUNTAIN!!!” So this went on for about 5 minutes. Than he started shouting, “LOOK A TREE!” and we had the same convo all over again, only this time regarding trees.

After 15 minutes of this, I said nicely “Okay Amir. I get it babe. No more mountains or trees please.” He got really quiet. I thought I might have hurt his feelings so I said, “What else do you see?”

Without hesitation he pointed out the window and yelled, “LOOK A LEAF!!!”
